Desert General Grows with the Literary Landscape
Just six months after opening our stand-alone bookstore in Twentynine Palms’ Tin Town—right next to Kitchen in the Desert, the High Desert’s new culinary destination—Desert General is growing again.
Brimming with creative energy and open seven days a week, Tin Town has quickly become a gathering place for both locals and visitors. And as Twentynine Palms emerges as a destination of choice for readers, writers, and literary professionals, Desert General is proud to reflect that spirit through a carefully curated selection of titles that celebrate the region’s past and present.
Our bookstore is rooted in the rich history of California, the pioneering legacy of the Old West, and the vibrant voices of local authors. Twentynine Palms has long been a haven for storytellers and self-reliant souls—from its early days as Chemehuevi land centered around the Oasis of Mara, to the gold rush prospectors and the WWI veterans who came west to homestead. That legacy of resilience and imagination lives on.
Today, the city is home to a thriving literary culture, anchored by its annual book festival, a growing community of desert-based writers and poets, and the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Mojave landscape. Whether you're attending the Twentynine Palms Book Festival, planning a retreat, or scouting a unique setting for a book launch, we are here to help you engage with the stories that define this place.
